BARBARA KONTJE
Director of Retirement, The Americas, American Express

Barbara is the Director of Retirement for the Americas for American Express.  She is responsible for $4.2 billion in retirement plan assets in the U.S.  She has oversight for both the DB and DC plans.  Barbara serves on the Retirement Savings Plan Investment Committee, the fiduciary committee for the U.S. DC plan.  Her role also includes oversight for the retirement programs for Latin America and Canada, where she works with regional colleagues on retirement and benefit programs.  She serves on the Amex Canada Retirement and Savings Plans Committee as well as the Investment Subcommittee.

Barbara’s additional responsibilities include the leadership of American Express’ employee financial wellness program, Smart Saving.  The intent of the Smart Saving program is to bring a more holistic perspective of the benefits offered by American Express to its employees to make it easier to support not only retirement savings, but the general financial wellness of each employee.  This program incorporates retirement education as well as general financial education to provide useful tools and resources to employees.

Barbara has a B.A. from the College of New Jersey and an MBA from Pace University in New York.

Barbara joined American Express in September 2007 and prior to that she was with Automatic Data Processing.
